About Seasonal Yoga

Seasonal Yoga is all about moving in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

As the seasons change, so does our focus – each one bringing a different kind of energy that we reflect through our yoga practice.

We use breath, movement, and mindfulness to support the body’s natural flow, gently working with energy lines (known as meridians) and the organs connected to each season. You’ll notice different postures, intentions, and even moods depending on the time of year.  Each is designed to help you feel balanced, energised, and in tune with yourself and the world around you.

Here’s a little insight into what each season brings to the mat:

Spring (21 March – 20 May)

Spring is all about fresh energy and new beginnings. It’s linked to the Wood element, with rising energy – just like buds bursting into bloom or sap rising in the trees.

We focus on the liver and gallbladder, supporting detox and direction. You might notice postures that twist, side bend, and root you firmly into the ground while encouraging flexibility, both in body and mind.

Early Summer (21 May – 20 June)

A season of connection and openness, Early Summer is associated with the Space element. We turn our attention to the pericardium (the protective layer around the heart) and something called the triple heater (an energy system in Traditional Chinese Medicine).

This is a time for expanding from the centre outwards and then returning to home base. Expect flowing arm movements, shoulder work, and a focus on spaciousness and connection.

Summer (21 June – 20 August)

The height of the year! Summer is full of energy and vitality and it’s ruled by the Fire element, turning our focus to the heart and small intestine.

Think uplifting, energising flows with lots of arm work and heart-opening poses. It’s a time to embrace joy, movement, and warmth.

Late Summer (21 August – 20 October)

This is a grounding season, connected to the Earth element. It’s all about stability, nourishment, and returning to your centre.

We work with the stomach and spleen, the organs of digestion and support. You’ll feel this in grounded, steady postures that help you feel centred and rooted, bringing your energy gently back to base.

Autumn (21 October – 20 December)

Autumn invites us to let go – just like the trees dropping their leaves. This season is linked to the Metal element, encouraging us to release what we no longer need, while keeping what still serves us.

The focus is on the lungs and large intestine, which support breathing and elimination. Expect movement that expands and contracts, breathwork, and a rhythm that mirrors the inhale and exhale of the season.

Winter (21 December – 20 March)

Time to slow down and go inward. Winter is the season of Water – a time for deep rest, reflection, and building reserves.

We gently work with the kidneys and bladder, and the practice often involves repeating postures slowly, moving with the spine’s natural fluidity. This helps us nurture resilience and conserve energy during the darker months.
